Taroko Gorge Scary Story
It’s spooky season which means it’s time for scary stories! 👻 Scary travel stories, that is. ✈️
I (Ashley) was in Taiwan 🇹🇼 several years back. I absolutely love it there. I highly recommend it, despite what I’m about to tell you.
It’s known for being one of the safest countries in the world, so it was kind of ironic when some girlfriends and I were visiting Taroko Gorge for the weekend and were robbed. Well, attempted robbery. A guy on a scooter rode by us on our bikes and tried to reach for my backpack. I had it clasped on, so it wouldn’t fall off while riding. It was a pretty weak attempt to grab it that I honestly had no idea what was happening until he turned around and tried to do it to my friend who proceeded to kick him, and off he went, having not succeeded. 🎒
We arrived back at our hotel and shared what happened with the staff, and they reported it to the police. We were not expecting what would happen next. We went to dinner and returned to 4 cops wanting to talk to us. We explained what happened. None of us were hurt or scared but just wanted to make the authorities aware. 👮
They went back to their headquarters, and the next day after hiking, we were greeted by the (I kid you not) entire police force. Yes, they were just waiting for us to get back from our hike so they could take us to the police department. 🥾
Now, remember how I said it’s one of the safest countries in the world? Their cop cars only have a protector shield behind the driver’s side. That’s how infrequent they’re arresting people.
Anyways, I guess it was the most thrilling thing to happen in this town because the entire police force was on a mission to find the guy, and they did.
It was truly the most shocking and surprising turn of events but the diligence with which the police went to ensure our safety was nothing like I’ve experienced anywhere.
What started as a potentially jarring moment turned into this weird and funny story, and I guess that’s the beauty of travel. Some scary moments end up being beautiful lessons learned. 🌎
